Belated Happy Birthday, Ate Susan!

On August 19, our former house-help celebrated her 54th birthday. Ate Susan was with us only a few days after my father died in 2003. She stayed for about 3 years. She had made life a lot bearable because of her funny attitude. The family was still grieving the loss of my father especially my Mom when Ate Susan arrived but she brought our house upside down with her crazy and funny attitude, hahaha! When she left us, she then worked in a family friends’ canteen as per our recommendation. She had also worked with two of my aunts; and now, she happily works as an overseer of a lodge that is owned by my brother’s co-band member.

Ate Susan has that unique attitude. Believe me when I say “unique“, she stands out from the crowd. And why not? She’s too loud and she knows everyone in the neighborhood; their lives and everything that I have no knowledge about. You see, I don’t go out of the house and I definitely don’t have the time to mind other people’s business. Ate Susan is the exact opposite. Everyone knows her and she knows everyone.

We’ve had our differences. Being so many years senior than I am, she doesn’t want to be told what to do. That’s where we always argue, hahaha! Good thing my Mom knows how to handle her.

We treated her like our own family. She also returns the favor. She was widowed twice, I repeat, twice… with no children of her own. She even made me and my brother the beneficiary of her health care insurance. My youngest brother she calls “My adopted”. She knows all our birthdays and even if she no longer works for us, she would come visit us with presents prepared for our birthdays. Isn’t she sweet? Despite her flaws and misgivings, her loyalty to our family is remarkable. Whenever we request for her services anytime, she can’t say “No”.

When she celebrated her birthday, she prepared some food for the occasion. I thought she got a lot of visitors.

But lo and behold!

The special guests were only US- my very own family!

She had to wait for me and my Mom after work. I had to rush coz I planned of buying her a cake.

I was telling the guy to move fast because Mom and the celebrant kept bugging me via SMSes with their "Where are you"? messages, hahaha!

The birthday cake

Make a wish!

My Mom demonstrating to her the proper way of blowing the candle on the cake, hahaha!

Yum Macaroni

My fave spaghetti :-)

I could only wish her more life, health, strength and the resilience and physical stamina to withstand whatever difficulties she may have to hurdle. All the very best on her birthday!
