I have learned the other night that our family friend, Ate, Nimfa, was confined at a hospital because of some kidney problems. We were worried. Then we all agreed in chorus that her drinking too much coke could be the culprit.
With Ate Nimfa
And how right we were!
Ate Nimfa is a person who thinks she would die without softdrinks (Coca Cola to be precise!). She drinks less water and would prefer bottles of coke.
Ate Nimfa’s case is not rare. There are a lot of people who suffered from even worse complications.
This made me scan my mailbox for an email I had received some years ago (July 27, 2005).

Coke or Water?WATER
- 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half world population.)
- In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
- Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%.
- One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
- Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
- Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
- A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
- Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50%less likely to develop bladder cancer.
Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?
COKE
- In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
- You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.
- To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coke into the toilet bowl and let the “real thing” sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
- To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminium foil dipped in Coke.
- To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coke over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
- To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coke to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
- To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coke into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminium foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for sumptuous brown gravy.
- To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coke will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
- The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.
- To carry coke syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.
- The distributors of carbonated sodas have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!
Now the question is,
would YOU like a glass of water or coke?
NOTE: Coke here refers to ALL soda, not specifically Coca-Cola.

Ewww on that coke! That is a huge culprit whenever one has kidney problems, as well as UTIs. Shame on me on the same hand, because I drink Sprite or other lemon sodas, especially when I have my period. Yeah, it sucks. I always have the cravings for it every time kaya may stock ako palagi na lemon soda, which I know isn't good at all. Ha ha ha. But I drink more than plenty of water, though, so I think it's being neutralized. LOL. Akong anak bitaw sis, sukad pagkatawo, never jud nakainom ug coke. NOT UNTIL nakauli mi diha last year, mga people sa among balay, especially her aunties, kusog manginom ug coke. Saon man na?! Hahaha.
Anyway, I would say water is the best. I am trying hard to eliminate sodas in my life baya kay I know it's not good at all. I'm a water person jud nuon, labi na ug buuuugnaw nga water! Hahaha. I know that coke can clean up a bowl and a sink, as I've done it before, and since then, di na ko gainom ug coke, sprite nalang! Toinks!

Same here, Jenn. But since I had hypertension, I was forced not to drink too much of anything. Everything should be in moderation.
Pareho jud ta! I was even hospitalized before for gastritis. Anything acidic I can't take in. It took me a long time before I finally recovered. I had to do away from anything acidic. Antos jud sa taman!

I am aware about the side-effects in drinking cola, but I can't resist it. Anyway, I am slowly shifting into drinking more water than cola.

What a wonderful post Lainy! Just to add to the points that you have made up above – there is a Nursing Home (what some people refer to as 'an old people's home) here in England. The lady in charge of the staff and residents began what she called 'A Water Club' – all members of the club were asked to have a small glass of water every hour or so. Every resident joined the club and they all began to have regular sips of water. The result was amazing – everyone's memory improved. Their mobility improved. Their overall well-being improved. They were more lively, more cheerful – everyone was astounded.
Who would have thought that just a few sips of water could improve the health and well being of so many people in a very short space of time?
It seems water has magical properties that we could all benefit from.

As Dhemz would say, "Holy Cranberry Batman!" I don't hardly drink carbonated drinks anymore, but it makes me skeptical to do so reading this if I ever get second thoughts about it! I remember my dad showed me when I was a child putting meat into a cup of Coke, and seen what it did after a couple of days. Yeah, it was gone!
I make sure I get my 24-pack of water every week. Obviously for health reasons, but Coke(or carbonated products) is one of the last things people should have because of what it can mentally.
Thanks for this great and factual post my dear friend!

Public awareness is spreading out really well against coke. Regular drinking of coke is really dangerous for the health and it is really good to stick to the natural resources.

Great interesting stuff. Coke and other softdrinks are harmful for the health. Some people are using it as toilet cleaner.

This was fascinating…. I'm now going to keep a bottle of coke under my sink for all these household remedies. Who would think? Need to up my water intake, but can I flavor it with tea or coffee? I hate drinking two gallons of pure unadulterated water every day.

Coke contains a quite a good amount of the added sugars. The excessive consumption of coke results into the decrease in the amount of the HDL-C or famously known as "good cholesterol" in the body. So, not only it is affecting the kidney but you it's proving to be one of the most hazardous stuff we consume by all means.
